“Earth Day is a time to celebrate and create new visions for the future” said Mr. and Mrs. Lozano so, we used Earth Day to promote the use of reusable shopping bags and educate residents about the value and importance of historic buildings like O.M. Roberts Elementary (the school is scheduled for demolition in the year 2012 by D.I.S.D.). Mr. Lozano was employed at O.M. Roberts for many years and is heartbroken to know the school and community will be destroyed. "Earth day is not just about appreciating the environment, it's about preserving it as well. Earth Day is a good day to visit a historical school and consider all that it stands for.” said Mr. Lozano. Residents distributed free reusable shopping bags, Jubilee Park’s very own comic book along with other StopDISD goodies like the unique silicone bracelets debossed with a “Unite 4 Preservation” message hoping to encourage preservation of their school and neighborhood.
Many people made commitments to help improve the environment this Earth Day (Recycle, Reuse, Reduce, Refurbish) let's hold on to the true meaning of the holiday and capture its spirit to make it part of our lives, long after we've turned April's page on the calendar.
